Slavery

Discovery School

http://school.discovery.com/schooladventures/slavery/

“Witness a slave auction, learn about the experiences of an individual slave, and see how slavery affects the whole world.”

An excellent site with good text and pictures, includes the story of an African man, born in Africa in 1745, enslaved first by another African tribe, then sold into slavery in America.

Africans in America

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/home.html

“Follow America's journey through slavery with historical narratives, biographies, photographs, documents, and more.”

The best and most comprehensive site, tons of information, photos and links.

Underground Railroad Summary

http://www.nps.gov/undergroundrr/ugsum.htm

“Brief summary of one of the most dramatic protest actions against slavery in United States history.”

An awesome site on the underground railroad. It also has an interesting section on African American stories beyond the slavery story, describing African American contributions in exploring and settling this country.

African American Odyssey: Abolition

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/aaohtml/exhibit/aopart3.html

“Library of Congress original documents, manuscripts, pictures, and more! Explore the quest for equality in different eras from times of slavery to the 20th century.”

If you want information on important abolitionists and anti-slavery activities, this is a great site with lots of quick descriptions.

African American Journey:

http://www.worldbook.com/wc/popup?path=features/aajourney&page=html/intro.html&direct=yes

“Follow the history of Africans' journey to America. Learn about slavery, their journey to freedom, the civil rights movement, and Black History Month, from World Book.”

Tons of readable information, great because it not only contains information on slavery in America, but also includes information on the flourishing slave trade within Africa prior to the trade in the Americas, and the lives of freed slaves during the Reconstruction period.

From Education World Search:
